The prison’s informal order begins before Billy understands its rules. Remaining uninvolved will not automatically keep him safe.
The Cafeteria Fight

The Cafeteria Fight
A provocation
A prisoner taunts Billy and reaches for his food, turning an insult into a public test of whether Billy will submit or fight.
Protection won through force
Billy takes the man down and is subsequently brought into the orbit of Black Larry’s group. The fight gives him allies, but it does not free him from obligation.
The Demand to Retaliate

The Demand to Retaliate
A forced assignment
Black Larry’s group tells Billy to attack a prison guard who has allegedly cheated them. Billy recognizes that compliance would deepen his involvement in prison violence.
Fear without a safe choice
Refusing risks retaliation from the group; agreeing risks punishment and injury. The system makes coercion look like voluntary loyalty.
The Fight with Tucker

Stabbed and Hospitalized
